Proper Plants is a family owned business started in 1977, by Russ and Lyn Madison, with two small greenhouses and has grown to approximately 50000 square feet. The business is continually changing by adding new varieties of plants and new services offered to our customers. Our business attracts beginners as well as serious gardeners. We are happy to offer assistance to our customers so they have a successful gardening experience. We feel very strongly about preserving the concept of the small, local, family owned business and farm. In addition to getting the freshest possible plants, customers know that they are supporting the local community when buying from Proper Plants. We believe that the customized personal service we offer to our customers is what keeps people returning every year to do business with a company they know they can trust.

    We grow everything sold from our greenhouses on site, and pride ourselves in selection and quality. This ensures our customers the freshest and healthiest plants possible because the plants come straight from our greenhouses to you. Customers are encouraged to walk through all the greenhouses and see how the plants they are buying are actually grown. Be sure to shop early for the best selection – we do not buy in from other growers. We are happy to answer any of your gardening questions. Russell grew up in South Sioux City, Nebraska on a large family farm. This led to a love of growing plants and a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Iowa State University. He worked as a manual arts therapist in horticulture with the Veterans Administration Hospital for 31 years. He owned a small garden center in Roseburg, Oregon and was quite involved with the local garden clubs and extension service. You will recognize him at the greenhouse wearing overalls and a “Proper Plants” cap. Needless to say, Russell has many years of experience in growing plants.     Lyn grew up in Louisville, Kentucky with a kindred love of plants and the outdoors. This led to a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture and Agricultural Education from the University of Kentucky. After meeting, Russ and Lyn fulfilled a dream of having their own greenhouse business and thus “Proper Plants” was born.           Tara began working with plants at a young age in her own backyard. She enjoyed gardening with her Dad, and he sparked an interest that continues today. Tara pursued her love of plants as she completed her degree in Horticulture Plant and Soil Science at The University of Kentucky. For the past 8 years she has continued her learning experience while working with Lyn and Russell at Proper Plants.    We also have have seasonal employees, many who have worked for us for several years.
